"But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

Chastleton House (22nd July)

We had to book a visit to this property in advance. We enjoyed visiting it a lot and would recommend it if you're in the Cotswolds. It is full of original Jacobean fittings and architecture. They give the kids bags (which included binoculars, a magnifying glass and a tape measure) for hunting for different things around the house and they were very welcoming of children.

Again, there is a Gunpowder Plot connection. Robert Catesby, the Plot ringleader, was the owner of the property, but had to sell it to pay a fine relating to his involvement in the Essex Rebellion against Elizabeth I. Walter Jones, one of the nouveau riche, bought the property and built the current house. However, his grandson lost a lot of money due to fines he incurred in supporting the Stuarts, and this was the beginning of their financial problems. This is one reason why the property retains so many original features; unlike others they didn't have the money to upgrade their house!
